Optimizing Treatment Decision Conversations
Target Audience
Medical practices that specialize in providing care to people living with HIV.
Objectives
To develop an interactive tool that could be used in the exam room to uncover unmet needs in patients’ treatment. We wanted to disrupt the traditional patient-provider dialogue that sometimes minimizes the importance of real-world patient considerations.
Why Focus on Patient Engagement?
Improving the conversation around the lifestyle implications of a patient’s treatment could help uncover foreseeable barriers to adherence, or lead to a different treatment option.
Results
Using evidence-based communication techniques, a set of scenario cards were designed to engage patients in honest conversations about treatment options that can support their specific lifestyle needs. These cards also help patients feel more in control of their treatment.
• In addition to the cards, supporting in-office materials were developed, including
• In-office posters to explain how doctors can implement this conversation tool into their appointments
A tear-pad that nurses can use to prep patients and collect helpful information to pass on to the physician
